The book has been updated so it covers the latest computer architectures like the 64-bit AMD Opteron as well as those from Sun, Intel and other major vendors. Each chapter is an excellent mix of theory and examination of existing hardware. Each chapter also has a Fallacies and Pitfalls section that typically includes real-world examples. Even experienced developers will find something new in these.

The chapters address major topics starting with Fundamentals of Computer Design and moving onto parallelism, including a chapter dedicated to multiprocessor architectures. I especially like the detail of the Memory Hierarchy Design chapter that delved into virtual machine considerations and an in depth examination of the AMD Opteron memory architecture.

The appendices make up a major chunk of the book. Appendix B covers instruction set principles. It would make a suitable semester course all by itself. The comparison of different architectures provides the same kind of useful insight to different design approaches as presented in the rest of the book.

I highly recommend this book for those learning about computer architecture or those wanting to understand architectures that differ from those they are currently using. It does an excellent job of covering most of the major architectural approaches employed today

اين كتاب جایگزین اصلی کتاب موریس مانو در دانشگاه های داخل کشور هست ، که نسخه 2004 این کتاب را آقای دکتر سپیدنام ترجمه و انتشارات علوم رایانه آن را منتشر کرده است. در این کتاب سعی شده به صورت جامع به تمامی مباحث مطرح شده در حوزه سازمان دهی و معماری کامپیوتر اشاره شود که base آموزشی کتاب بر روی پردازنده های پنتیوم و PowerPC هست اما بر خلا�? کتاب های دیگری که در ادامه معر�?ی می کنم ، زیاد وارد بحث معماری داخلی پردازنده نشده و در بسیاری از موارد مانند بخش pipelining به توضیح کلی �?ارق از جزئیات معماری و کنترلی Datapath پرداخته است.

The first half of Modern Operating Systems focuses on traditional operating systems concepts: processes, deadlocks, memory management, I/O, and file systems. There is nothing groundbreaking in these early chapters, but all topics are well covered, each including sections on current research and a set of student problems. It is enlightening to read Tanenbaum's explanations of the design decisions made by past operating systems gurus, including his view that additional research on the problem of deadlocks is impractical except for "keeping otherwise unemployed graph theorists off the streets."

The difference with this book to all the others I have read is how John Iovine makes it all so simple. He has detailed intructions of all his projects which are some of the most exciting I have yet seen. He uses microcontrollers to interface with servo motors,DC motors AC appliances & stepper motors to name a few. The strength of Iovines approach is in the Pic programming software which converts your basic program into machine code. This enables you to write short tight programs which, because a basic interpreter is not required, run very fast indeed. The hardware required is clearly stated with each Chapter and is very reasonbly priced. A list of suppliers is also included.In short this is a ‘must-have’ book for anybody starting out experimenting with microcontrollers. It is also very suitable for ‘intermediates’and younger people who have an interest in electronics and want to know more about what microcontrollers will do in a wonderfully readable format. Enjoy!

This is one of the best presentations of digital electronics in the CPLD Altera MAX Plus II design enviroment and VHDL I have ever seen. I do not know of another digital book like it.

We used this book for an intro course on computer engineering.
The book, despite being the 1st edition, is very clear and concise, and I turned to it a number of times when the lectures weren't as clear and specific as they might be. Duecks book delves into a bit more detail with more examples {on things like flipflops, latches etc} than other similar books on the market. It also relates the material learned to actual computers looking at the structure of RAM in home PC's.

هر رشته‌ای یک کتاب مقدس یا مرجع داره که داخلش اکثر مباحث کلیدی اون رشته پوشش داده شده است، این کتاب ها که اغلب Handbook نام دارند در رشته ما هم توی �?یلد طراحی و ساخت تراشه‌ها VLSI Handbook هست
این کتاب حدود 2400 ص�?حه مطلب ناب علمی داره که همین امسال (2007) منتشر شده و مطالبش کاملا به روزه و در جدیدترین دست‌آوردهای مهندسین برق و کامپیوتر رو در این حوزه تشریح کرده. امروز که داشتم نسخه الکترونیک اون رو ورق می‌زدم در کمال ناباوری دیدم که یک �?صل کامل این کتاب رو محققین و اساتید هم‌وطن خودمون نوشتند.

VLSI CAD has greatly benefited from the use of reduced ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) and the clausal representation as a problem of "Boolean Satisfiability" (SAT), e.g. in logic synthesis, verification or design-for-testability. In recent practical applications, BDDs are optimized with respect to new objective functions for design space exploration. The latest trends show a growing number of proposals to fuse the concepts of BDD and SAT.

Advanced BDD Optimization gives a modern presentation of the established as well as of recent concepts. Latest results in BDD optimization are given, covering different aspects of paths in BDDs and the use of efficient lower bounds during optimization. The presented algorithms include Branch and Bound and the generic A*-algorithm as efficient techniques to explore large search spaces.

The A*-algorithm originates from "Artificial Intelligence" (AI), and the EDA community has been unaware of this concept for a long time. Recently, the A*-algorithm has been introduced as a new paradigm to explore design spaces in VLSI CAD. Besides AI search techniques, Advanved BDD Optimization also discusses the relation to another field of activity bordered to VLSI CAD and BDD optimization: the clausal representation as a SAT problem.

When regarding BDD optimization, mainly the minimization of diagram size was considered. The present book is the first to give a unified framework for the problem of BDD optimization and it presents the respective recent approaches. Moreover, the relation between BDD and SAT is studied in response to the questions that have emerged from the latest developments. This includes an analysis from a theoretical point of view as well as practical examples in formal equivalence checking.

Advanced BDD Optimization closes the gap between theory and practice by transferring the latest theoretical insights into practical applications.
